Is anyone who drives my car insured?

Absolutely not! Very few people have motor insurance policies that state they can drive any other vehicle under fully comprehensive cover. But if the driver has fully comprehensive insurance for their own car, they will be covered in a third party capacity.

This means that, in the event of an accident, the costs of the other party will be met but yours won’t. Even if you trust them and their driving implicitly then, an accident may not be their fault, so this is a fairly risky strategy.

The safest way for anyone who is not you to get behind the wheel of your car is to be logged with the insurer as a named driver. This is where you pay extra to add them onto your policy and they will be as fully covered as you are. Insurers will allow you to add drivers temporarily at little cost and just a phone call so, in my opinion, it’s always worth doing.
