What can I do to obtain a discount on my
home insurance?

Ah! This is a good question as there are several measures you can take. The first is always to shop around – never just renew your existing household policy or accept the first new quote you are offered. But, even when you find the cheapest deal, there are ways to reduce the cost further.

Buying both buildings and contents together will usually get you about 10% off the quoted annual premium and you’ll get a further typical 10% for buying online opposed to on the phone or in a branch.

In the vast majority of cases, it will also be cheaper to pay the annual premium upfront; not a lot of people know this but some insurers charge up to 30% APR for the privilege of paying monthly. The average though, is around 10%.

Finally, you can make security improvements to your home such as adding approved door and window locks and a working alarm. Household insurers like added security for obvious reasons so this will shave further off the premium still.
